Thumbs up 6-month buprenorphine IMPLANT FDA approved today

Today, the FDA finally approved Probuphine, a 6 month buprenorphine implant which is inserted under the skin with a large syringe.

Here is the FDA's press release: http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsro.../ucm503719.htm

Here is NAABT's commentary prior to the approval:
http://www.naabt.org/blog/post.cfm/f...o-probuphine-1

Also this page shows how many people died of overdose deaths while the FDA was doing their thing: http://www.naabt.org/probuphine.php

This treatment is only for people who have been stable in other forms of buprenorphine treatment for some time, not as a first treatment.

This approval makes the patient limits even more useless than they already are, as risk of diversion of the implant is insignificant.

You're probably right. But in time, the price will come down and more insurers will cover it. I think it presents a lifeline for those unable to take medication as prescribed or for those who travel abroad or can't get to monthly appointments.

It's also interesting to consider the impact of not having to take something daily or make the monthly trip to the pharmacy, which can be a trigger for some people.

I also wonder what it might mean for tapering, as at the end of six months it does't just turn off, but drops below the guaranteed dose. It might provide a gradual taper that lasts for months. Although it is not approved for this.
