Thanks deedle, you didn't really have everything in one place where I could put a link, so you saved me from piecing things together!

Hey Brad1234 I was on sub for a year. Started at 16mg. Took 2 months to go from 2 to 0. Reduced .5 every two weeks. But I would have stayed on longer if I had to. Just do all the crap you have to get ready to taper. Counseling, support, exercise, eat right, change what you need to change to get rid of triggers and cravings. Then go slow and don't pressure yourself. Positive tapering energy! -Mary

Thanks for all the success stories it makes something that seems pretty scary feel like a possibility. I'm starting g to feel like the old me like I can do anything! But... I feel the need to start getting a taper plan because I don't fear ever going back to opiates again, and I'm starting to want to be off all prescriptions! (for the first time in years!) It's still a hard concept for me I want it, I guess I have to figure out how much and set my mind to it.

Hi Newlife30, that's great that you're thinking about tapering. Just make sure that you're doing it for the right reasons and not forcing yourself into anything.

Have you seen this thread on the phases of treatment? It might be helpful:
http://www.addictionsurvivors.org/vb...ad.php?t=23809

What dose are you currently taking and how long have you been in treatment, if you don't mind my asking.

Default Off for 6 months+

Hello everyone,

I have been off of sub since December. Its been 6 months off.
I was on Suboxone and Subutex from October 2010 through to December 2012. So a little over 2 years. I struggled to get lower than the 2mg dose. I was able to stay on 1mg for a few months, but still had a hard time going down from there.
I think people get so eager at the end of their taper and jump too fast. Which to me would be my biggest piece of advice is to take as much time at the end as you did at the beginning to really make sure you are comfortable. Don't rush yourself off. Sub was a blessing to me and I don't know where my life would be today if I hadn't pursued the help. I did relapse a couple times but briefly and I always got back on track. I would recommend to sub to anyone who can afford it.....I know that was the biggest obstacle for me was the thousands of dollars I spent but it was WELL WORTH IT. Sub is no joke.....follow as directed, be safe, and use the time on sub to really get the rest of your life in order. If anyone has any questions I'd be more than happy to share my personal experience. I am proud of everyone here and this site helped me tremendously the first year especially that I was on sub. Thanks to everyone, Nancy, the members, I was truly helped by being able to come on here and talk. XOXO Erika from Boston

Default percentage of opioid receptors affected

Erikanh80, Thanks for posting your experience and congratulations for achieving sustained addiction remission!!

Your post reminds me about something everyone who plans on tapering should understand:
When someone successfully tapers from 16mgs to 2mgs they might think they are almost done having dropped 88%, but really they are closer to the ˝ way point. The way buprenorphine affects the brain isn’t a linear relationship to dose. 2mg may occupy 50% of the receptors that are occupied at 16mgs (or 24mgs or 32mgs for that matter). This PET scan shows receptor availability at different doses and you can see that at 2mgs a significant amount of receptors are occupied. Dropping from 2mgs to 1mg is actually a more significant drop than when dropping from 32mgs to 16mgs.

We recommends to taper with no more than 25-30% dose decreases once at or below 2mgs./day. Pace the taper with your individual ability to adapt to each decrease, this might mean remaining at some doses longer than others.

Note: The PET scan is for one individual, results may differ from person to person particularly at lower doses. see this study for more on receptor saturation.

Thank you Tim & Nancy!!

Tim I can attest 100% to your post! I was at first discouraged that the drop from 2mg to 1mg was so challenging and uncomfortable because I believed I was almost finished.

Due to not being informed about how strong 2mg truly is, that period was when I struggled the most, hands down!!!

I tried tapering too fast at that point, I tried just stopping altogether, I relapsed, I ended up going to inpatient detoxification and rehab several times.......all before I realized i needed to take my time and forget about the "dose" and concentrate on how i FELT!!

I can honestly say out of 26 months on subutex & suboxone, that at least 8 of those months were spent tapering from 2mg to 0.
It is absolutely a crucial time and perhaps the least discussed among patients and their Doctors.
I hope people tapering read this and the scientific data Tim that you posted above about the receptor activity at low doses because the more people know the less they will become disappointed or discouraged and be better ready to successfully complete their taper, knowing what to expect!!

Again, I cannot thank this site enough for giving a confidential support forum where there are NO "stupid questions" and an enormous amount of support and knowledge. I look forward to helping anyone with my experience.... 1 day at a time, sobriety is not only achieveable & sustainable, but it is enjoyable too! I love living a sober life!

Tim,
I like that PET scan you highlighted. I had no idea. I am glad I was able to get off of this medicine. It's funny how much more green shows up when at 00mg. I like how that little red spot starts popping up when you are off completely.

Tapering is always my preferred route. It has worked great for me on a few different rx drugs.

Oh cool, I see Nancy posted my link. Just wanted to add real quick, I am officially two weeks OFF! I'm doing great, really. It's definitely a process and I can still tell my body is trying to come to terms with the fact that it does not have opiates pumping through it anymore, but keeping busy and exercising and keeping a positive outlook has helped tremendously.
